Not Stanley's Knife

Alexander Hulme

A normal day

Artist Alexander Hulme made a study out of all the things he uses in the course of a normal day. Another example that proves that every-day-objects can be so inspiring! Even when they're not photographed in an artistic, special way. Which I like in this case because it's documentary. Just everyday-objects. Just interesting.

Let's go fly a kite

This is the result of an assignment I did last year at my school ( the Dutch Film & Television Academy). We had to design a building for a sort of island near the Central Station in Amsterdam. I made a large teahouse in a wall inspired by the Japanese art of kirigami, the little buildings are also teahouses where people can enjoy their cup of tea in a smaller environment. The wall is placed in front of two large fields designed for flying kites! The large field is for the adults, the tinier is for children. Of course I couldn't design a kite-flying-island without windmills and colourful flags.

VISION - Lace Up Canvas Shoe

How cute are these lace-ups! Seen on topshop.com. I really like that they've added some colour to this classic model. Yes, I'm thinking of buying them ( when I get back from Italy of course! But I must admit, I haven't kept my promise. I bought a T-shirt at Zara this saturday. But it was only €5,00 - and very artistic-looking! )

iPhone 3GS... True love

Within an hour I'm returning to my Amsterdam-appartment and there will be waiting ... my brandnew iPhone 3GS! Finally a new phone, the newest of the newest. Can't wait. Me and gadgets, I don't know what it is.

Edit: I'm in love. He's fantastic. He's my new best friend. One of the most brilliant features is an Application in which you can sing a song or let the iPhone hear (part of) a song and then it tells you which song it is! I can't stop singing!

Only in my dreams

I can only dream about these wonderful pieces from A.P.C. ... because they're all sold out!
Only the dress is still available. Unfortunately I promised myself not to buy any clothes until I'm leaving for Italy ( on July 24th ).

Bridget Jones numero three

This is the best news I've heard this year so far:

"Renee Zellweger set to return in new movie from Working Title about the hapless singleton's quest to have a child"
( The Guardian Newspaper )

I'm the biggest Bridget Jones-fanatic. I've seen the first two films for at least thirty times (literally), and well... this is just fan-tas-tic. Unfortunately the film won't go into production before the end of the year but it IS coming! Now let's hope it'll be a good one.

Waste Not

This shows how interesting everyday-life can be. These are photos from an exhibition at MoMA, NY, in which the Chinese artist Song Dong arrayed all the contents of his mother's former home. The woman, Zhao Xiangyuan lived in in Beijing with her man and two children in a tiny house. Conservation was carried to extravagant lengths for the family was very poor.
Look at all those colours and shapes! I've always had a thing for packages so I got really excited when I saw all the different toothpastes.

War Horse

This morning I read about War Horse, a play about a little boy who becomes best friend and owner of Joey, a horse. After some time Joey is sold to a British officer to ride into battle in World War I. The little boy is determined to find Joey and leads him to enlist, underage, so he can fight in Europe as well and maybe find his horse.

I haven't seen the play myself but I was amazed by the horse-puppets, for which their creators received an Olivier Award for design. Every part of the horse can be moved individually, which really makes them look alive, they even breathe!

There is a really interesting article about how the horses were made here

Of course I was curious to see the horses in motion, if you are too...click!

The most cosiest feeling in the world:

Learning Italian

I'm going on a 2-week-trip with my best friend to Italy by the end of July. When going to a "foreign country" I'm always scared that people will ask me something in a language I don't understand. That's why I'm kind of obsessed with learning foreign languages. It started when I was little with the English language. My favourite thing to do during vacations was translating English Vogues, I seriously spent hours writing everything down in Dutch.
Four years ago I went to Spain for the first time. I got really frustrated when I couldn't understand a thing from what the Spanish people were saying so when I returned home I began a do-it-yourself course in Spanish!
And now it's Italian. It definitely is more difficult than Spanish but it does help that I know quite some words in Spanish. The pronunciation is really different though. But I can count already!! I can feel your curious... Let me show you:

undici

tredici

Molto bene, eh?

Dan in real life

This evening I watched "Dan in real life"(2007), starring three of my favourite actors: Juliette Binoche, Steve Carell and Amy Blunt. I loved every minute of it. The acting, the music ( FANTASTIC!), the production design was also great. I decided, as a future-production designer, that this film really stands for the sort of films I want to make "when I grow up". Just like Little Miss Sunshine (2004), which featured Carell as well (that rhymes!). It's just great. I'm in love. I really can fall in love with movies. Not many. But if I do, it's true love.
Dan in real life tells us the story of Dan, a widower who has to take care of his three daughters. During a family weekend Dan falls in love with a woman, which puts him in a complicated situation which leads to funny, touching and strangely romantic moments.
To get you in the mood, two beautiful songs from the movie. One of them happy, one of them slightly sad, but beautiful.

The sad one (cover, but nicely done... I couldn't find the original)

The happy one

Bike

When I was little the best day of the year was always the day I got a new bike. A few weeks ago I finally bought a bike in Amsterdam because I got really fed up with travelling by tram. And again, I was as happy as I was when I was a kid with my new bike.

Up!

A few days ago I watched Pixar's latest movie UP! And watched it again two days later. What's always the case with me and Pixar: I fall in love. Balloons, blue skies, lovely characters (Kevin is my absolute favourite) and especially fantastic music! To encourage you to go and see UP!, here's the most beautiful soundtrack from the movie called Married Life. If you like this, you will fall in love, just like me.
